3.32 TS – Byzantium and Rome (8th–11th c.): Churches, Liturgy, Saints

This thematic session aims to develop the general theme of the Congress (‘Byzantium beyond Byzantium’) in two directions, focusing on the period from the 8th to the 11th century: 1) the phenomena of the circulation of men and ideas between the Byzantine East and Rome (or Italy); 2) the transfer of manuscripts, texts, works of art, and artefacts towards Rome and the West, or in the opposite direction from Italy towards Constantinople and the East. Consequently, it is expected that the papers are expected to focus on the following topics: (1) the ecclesiastical and diplomatic relations between Constantinople and Rome; (2) the analogies, differences, and relationships between the two capitals; (3) the presence of “Greek” monks, ecclesiastics, diplomats, scholars and artists in medieval Rome, or, on the contrary, the presence of Italians in Constantinople; (4) the transfer from Byzantium to Rome or Italy – or vice versa – of manuscripts, works of art, texts, relics; (5) the relationship with Rome of “Greek” intellectuals, teachers, scribes who emigrated from Constantinople and the East.
