This volume celebrates the long institutional career and the outstanding scholarly production of Jannic Durand. Four years after he retired from the département des Objets d’art at the Louvre Museum in August 2022, and nearly forty years after the seminal exhibition Byzance dans les collections publiques françaises, his colleagues and former students contributed to a volume of Mélanges published in Travaux & Mémoires (vol. 30/1). This volume brings together fifty-four contributions — in French, English, and Italian — related to Jannic’s areas of research, encompassing the late antique and medieval Mediterranean, Early Modern Europe, fine arts and iconography, history of artworks and collections, relics and reliquaries, and interactions between various areas of the Christian East and the Latin West. These contributions testify to the influence of Jannic’s work and constitute a tribute to the esteem in which he is held by the international scholarly community, and to the lasting friendships forged in France and abroad. The presentation of the volume at the opening day of the Congress is an additional tribute to Jannic’s commitment to the AIEB and to his efforts to value the fields of Art History and Heritage in the Congress.

Cambridge Elements in Rethinking Byzantium

This series aims to render the vibrant world of the eastern Roman empire more accessible to a broad academic audience of students, teachers and researchers than traditional specialized scholarship typically allows. It highlights research that reflects new thinking about the conceptualization of eastern Roman culture and society within broader schemas of pre-modern history and cultural study, and so challenges established understandings of the field of “Byzantine Studies” and the traditional (and problematic) rubrics of “Byzantium” and “Byzantine.” The series further queries the boundaries of the discipline by exploring communities often relegated to the interstices between more established fields of study and by interrogating connections between cultural products, religion, and political communities. In this way, it fosters a dynamic conversation on the future of the field without imposing a uniform framework or approach. Individual contributions encompass the visual and literary cultures, history, and religion in the cultural sphere of the Roman empire, broadly conceived, from the fourth to fifteenth centuries CE. The standard claim is that the core of the novel was the Christianisation of the life of the Buddha. Basso’s approach recurs to a new alternative explanation theory: the Karussell-Modell.

Recent publications by the French School at Athens
The French School at Athens recently published several books in the field of Byzantine Studies. During this session, two of them will be presented by their authors:
Brendan Osswald, L’acolouthie de sainte Théodora d’Arta par Job Melês, Athens (École française d’Athènes), 2025.
The Akolouthia of Saint Theodora of Arta is an essential source for the history of the State of Epirus during the 13th century. It is dedicated to Theodora Petraliphina, wife of Despot Michael II and later revered as a saint. This book provides a six-chapter introduction to the text (including a biography of Theodora Petraliphina), the first critical edition of the full text, based on the sole surviving manuscript and the 18th century editio princeps, along with a translation and historical commentary.
Lilyana Yordanova, À la gloire de Dieu ! Commande et donation pieuses en Bulgarie médiévale, XIIe-XVe siècles, Athens (École française d’Athènes), 2025.
This book provides the first comprehensive study of pious patronage in medieval Bulgaria (12th–15th centuries). Drawing on visual, material, and written sources, it examines the transformation of religious gift-giving across Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Ottoman rule. By approaching in tandem elite and modest forms of patronage, it reassesses their role in shaping spatial dynamics, ecclesiastical institutions, and medieval society.
