The Caucasia Initiative

The Caucasica Initiative aims to draw attention to the historical and cultural diversity of the Caucasus in the premodern times through a range of scientific activities, the most significant of which is the launch of a new academic journal. Caucasia: Journal of Premodern History of the Caucasus is an open-access journal that aims to provide a scholarly platform that moves beyond predominantly superregional, imperial, or centre-oriented frameworks, which have often shaped research on the region. Instead, the journal promotes a historical-philological and source-based approach that considers the Caucasus on its own terms, while situating it within broader patterns of interaction and exchange. At the same time, the journal explicitly encourages contributions that explore the Caucasus in relation to adjacent regions and larger cultural spheres, thereby fostering a more interconnected and nuanced understanding of the area. The journal adopts an international and interdisciplinary perspective, supported by an inclusive and diversified scientific advisory board comprising senior and early-career scholars. The Publisher is Amsterdam University Press. Caucasia is a biannual (two issues per year) and double-blind peer-reviewed periodical that welcomes contributions of scholars working across Armenian, Georgian, Daghestani, Ossetian-Alanian, Caucasian Albanian, Islamic, Turkic and Iranian studies associated with the Caucasus. Contributions from a wide range of historical and literary subfields can be submitted in English, German, and French. The editors-in-chief are Benedetta Contin and Giorgio Rota (Austrian Academy of Sciences).
