Two Unpublished Letters of Friar Simon the Constantinopolitan

In Constantinople during the 13th and 14th centuries, after the Latin conquest, the presence of the Western Church and its monastic orders was prominent. Among them, the Dominican Order held a distinguished position, aiming, among other, to persuade not only the emperor but also other prominent figures of the imperial court of the "legitimacy" of Latin views regarding the procession of the Holy Spirit. The activities of the Dominican Order are also linked to Friar Simon the Constantinopolitan, whose two unpublished letters will be presented in this paper. These letters are addressed to the commentator on Aristotle, Sophonias, and a certain nomophylax (legal official) named John. Among the questions that we will attempt to answer in this paper are issues concerning their location, their importance, their addressees, their content, their style and language, as well as their purpose.
