The Archaeology of the Gortynian Episcopate in the 8th Century

The history of the episcopate of Gortyn enters a phase of significant reconfiguration of its monumental focal points during the 8th century. This transformative period begins with the activity of Archbishop Andreas and culminates in the earthquake of 796, which brought about the definitive destruction of the episcopal church. Over the course of these decades, the complex underwent substantial structural modifications as well as a renewal of its decorative programs. The present report outlines the results of archaeological excavation campaigns carried out within the framework of a collaborative agreement between the Italian Archaeological School at Athens, the University of Bologna, and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion.
