Chants for Marian Feasts Between East and West: Mapping Reception

It is commonly assumed that most Marian feasts were imported to Rome from Byzantium, yet the history is more complex: on the one hand, some of the feasts obviously originated in Jerusalem and its environs; on the other hand, the Roman Rite developed considerably outside the Eternal City. Chants for the feast of the Dormition or Assumption will be taken as an example for mapping developments and analysing influences. Shifts, nuances, and interdependences in the theology of the occasion will be traced in Jerusalem, Byzantium, Rome, and the Non-Roman West.
