Minor Details, Major Insights: Flora in the Skylitzes Matritensis

The Madrid Skylitzes miniatures are among the most widely recognized images of Byzantine art, reproduced for decades in textbooks, scholarly works and university courses. More than any other Greek medieval manuscript, they have served as realia in visualizing the Byzantine court, warfare, and ceremonial life. Yet, despite their familiarity, a closer look reveals a striking absence: depictions of flora are minimal, often confined to schematic or allusive motifs. This paper examines these sparse representations of plants, trees, and flowers, asking not “what plant is this?” but why vegetation appears at all, in such stylized form, in the precise context of a chronicle manuscript otherwise unconcerned with the natural world. I propose that these overlooked details function as subtle but persistent layers of meaning, contributing to the construction of the visual narrative in ways that exceed mere decoration. By foregrounding these ‘minor details,’ the study highlights how attentive looking can recover alternative registers of meaning in Byzantine manuscript illumination.
