The Critical Edition of Leontius of Jerusalem’s Contra Nestorianos

According to the most recent research, Leontius of Jerusalem is a theologian of the last quarter of the sixth century and the first quarter of the seventh century (ca. 580-620). Although we do not know anything about this author other than that he wrote two Christological works, Contra Monophysitas and Contra Nestorianos, he was one of the greatest theologians of his era (not of Justinian's era, as previously believed). While his Contra Monophysitas already enjoys a critical edition by Patrick T.R. Gray (2006), his more complex Contra Nestorianos is only now being critically edited. In this paper, I would like to present my work on the critical edition of Leontius' Contra Nestorianos. I will discuss the late dating of Leontius of Jerusalem, the manuscripts containing the Greek text, the editorial challenges faced along the way, and several historical revisions brought about by reconsidering the position of Leontius of Jerusalem within 6th-century Christology.
