Musically Performing Holy Week According to the Typikon of the Anastasis

Studied most recently by Daniel Galadza, the so-called Typikon of the Anastasis (MS Jerusalem, Hagios Stavros 43, dated 1122) contains texts and rubrics for services for the Church of Jerusalem during the seasons of Lent and Easter, representing the final stages of the Holy City's distinct local urban rite. By cross-referencing the contents of the Typikon of the Anastasis with other manuscript sources both with and without musical notation, this paper discusses the music of its services for Holy Week. In particular, it examines how the musical performance of these services depended on both written and oral traditions for the rendering of psalmody and hymnody.
