How Roman Was Byzantine Law? Some Thoughts

The answer to this question appears to be: very. The term Byzantine was never in use by the people who lived in what remained of the Roman Empire. They considered themselves to be Romans. So their law appears to be Roman, albeit in a later phase of development. Or was it not?
