What did it mean to be a man in Byzantium? What was acceptable and what was not? What were gender norms in Byzantine society? And how is our understanding of these shaped by our changing understandings of gender and gender formation now? This paper looks to explore how the hugely important work done in trans and queer studies about the openendedness of gender should inform Byzantine Studies – and how Byzantine Studies has something to say in return.
