On the Corpus of Gregory Palamas’ Homilies

After the edition provided by P.K. Chrestu (1985), the Corpus of Homilies by Gregory Palamas received another edition by B. Pseutogkas in 2015, for which a total of 13 manuscripts were used. One of these manuscripts is Hagion Oros, Μονή Βατοπεδίου 134 (Diktyon 18278), which since the brief description by Arkadios Vatopedinos has been wrongly dated to the 15th century instead of to the 14th century. Applying palaeographical and codicological criteria, the copy preserved today in ms. Vatop. 134 was recently dated around the year 1364, i.e. close to the death of the Saint, which is now placed in the year 1357. Contrary to what is stated in the prolegomena of Pseutogkas’ edition (p. 28 and 36), the user of this edition will notice that this text carrier has not been taken into account for the constitution of the text very systematically. The paper will discuss the value of the manuscript within the transmission of the Homilies and the editorial handling of this important witness.
