Teaching Elementary Spelling in the Palaiologan Period

The paper will investigate the transmission of elementary spelling instruction in Palaiologan Constantinople. Drawing on educational practices rooted in the Komnenian period, it examines the available instructional materials and searches for the pedagogical principles that underpinned them. The discussion highlights the roles, intentions, and perspectives of the principal authors involved in producing these materials, focusing on the continuities and transformations of elementary education in late Byzantine society.
