Cultural and Artistic Interconnections in the Late Sixteenth-Century Sinai: The Fresco of the Last Judgment in the Old Refectory of Saint Catherine’s Monastery (1573)

This paper examines the monumental fresco of the Last Judgment that covers the eastern wall of the Old Refectory of Saint Catherine’s Monastery at Sinai, dated by an inscription to 1573. Through a combination of iconographic analysis, stylistic examination, and, where available, consultation of written sources, the paper seeks to clarify the painter’s origins and to situate the work within its broader artistic context. In doing so, it aims to shed light on the monastery’s cultural networks and connections as well as its role in the circulation of artistic traditions during the second half of the sixteenth century.
