Patronage, Art, and Monastic Networks in Eastern Europe

This contribution will focus on aspects of patronage and the promotion of monastic networks in Eastern Europe during the 14th and 15th centuries, with a particular focus on connections with Mount Athos among regions of the Balkan Peninsula and the Carpathian Mountains. The discussion will touch on the development of new sacred landscapes connected with Byzantine models in the territories of medieval Serbia, Bulgaria, and the Romanian principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia, and the spread of artistic and architectural styles through the movement of people, objects, and ideas before and after 1453.
