Late Antique Lifeworlds in Corycus

The lecture presents the city of Corycus as a case study offering insight into life in the Isaurian-Cilician coastal region. By drawing on an operationalised concept of ‘lifeworld’, the disparate archaeological, literary and epigraphic material can be reinterpreted. The literary tradition surrounding the martyr Charitine will play a special role in this. However, the perspective taken is not that of a specific individual, but rather the multi-perspectivity that can be gained through a variety of considered genres and sources. The focus is on what one would call cultural ascriptions rather than realia. I ask about options and categories of thought and action that were available to individuals in a particular place during the 6th century.
