Digital Tools for the Analysis and Description of Handwriting

This part of the session will present how leading-edge technologies in computer vision (CV) and artificial intelligence (AI) can be applied to digitised images of Cyrillic manuscripts, enabling in-depth description of their physical and visual attributes, structured management of codicological and palaeographical datasets, advanced computational processing such as feature extraction and pattern recognition, effective management and curation of the resulting metadata, rich visualisation of manuscript letters and comparative-analytical frameworks that can reveal new information and provide researchers with specific observations, allowing them to be more confident about their assumptions, conclusions and studies. This part will outline the stages in developing an open-source, sustainable infrastructure tailored for the analysis, management, visualization, description, structuring, and other processing of Cyrillic manuscripts.
