The Church of Saint Mary in Barmash remains a representative monument of painting from the second decade of the seventeenth century. Closely related to other overlooked or nearly abandoned monuments in the Kolonjë region—such as those at Lashova, Postenani, and Shalësi—it holds significant value both for scholars of art and for the broader understanding of Albania’s cultural heritage. The date 1616, recorded in the dedicatory inscription, places the Barmash paintings at an interesting chronological point for further study. This period coincides with the flourishing activity of workshops originating from Linotopi in the region, suggesting that the icon painters of Saint Mary in Barmash may have been associated with these artistic circles. Iconographic and stylistic analysis closely connects Barmash with the work of masters such as Mihal of Linotopi and his collaborators Theologi and Nikola—artists whose production reached its culmination around 1616–1617. Within this framework, the Barmash ensemble gains overdue scholarly attention while enriching our knowledge of the Linotopi painters’ oeuvre during the first quarter of the seventeenth century, thus expanding the known geographical scope of their artistic activity.
